Kevin Burns to Announce for State Senate District 35
The former North Miami Mayor shifts focus to South Florida's needs and Tallahassee's Problems

Miami, Florida - 05/05/2010 - Mayor Kevin Burns will announce later today that he will seek the Democratic nomination for State Senate District 35.  The seat was vacated when Senator Dan Gelber opted to run for Attorney General.

On the switch, Kevin had this to say:
"I chose public service to make a difference, locally, in my community, and I believe I have done that.  I'm making the switch to the State Senate race because I believe it is the way for me to continue to make a difference, here in my community, in Tallahassee and for all the people of Florida."

About his role in Tallahassee:
"This year's session the legislature made unprecedented assaults on civil rights, the environment, teachers, women and decency in general -- that is compounded by the loss of some of our strongest Democratic voices in House and Senate, Senators Aronberg and Gelber and Representative Randolph.  I am stepping forward to try to fill the void those men left in their wake.  I hope to earn the support of my district so I can go to Tallahassee and represent them, continuing to standing up against off shore drilling and fighting for our students, workers and the preservation of our beautiful state."

On his US Senate Campaign:
"I don't regret a single day of it, I got to travel all over this state, visiting more than fifty counties, meeting and listening to Floridians from all walks of life.  I learned a great deal about the people of this state and about myself.  I believe the experience will make me a better State Senator and a better person."

Mayor Kevin Burns is a graduate of Miami Edison Senior High School and a native south Florida resident.  Born at St Francis Hospital on Miami Beach and raised with his six brothers and sisters in North Dade.  Kevin and his partner Rob are raising their daughter Autumn in North Miami.

Twice elected as Mayor of North Miami, Kevin took on the entrenched political machine in the city and won decisive victories due to his dogged determination and focus on uniting the citizens to find solutions to the city's problems.  He inherited a city in disarray – revolving city managers and senior staff, constant turnover, and an outdated, small town outlook that was hindering North Miami from participating in the growth and success the rest of South Florida was enjoying.

In response, Kevin reorganized the structure of city government, brought in new senior staff, and increased accountability for department heads.  He created a Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) to spark development and economic success, repaired the city's crumbling facilities, and pushed green building codes to ensure environmental responsibility and save the city money.  And he developed a new emergency response process after Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma struck North Miami in 2005.

Importantly, underscoring his focus on education, under Kevin's leadership the City of North Miami opened five new schools in a three-year period – an unprecedented $200 million construction project that ensured the city's students would enjoy exceptional school facilities to support their educational goals.

Kevin will make his first public announcement of his candidacy at tonight's DFAM (Democracy for America of Miami Dade) meeting at The Sports Exchange in Coral Gables, there will be availability for media following the meeting.
